The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) of 1993 provides that eligible employees are entitled to leave of up to 12 weeks per calendar year of scheduled leave for a serious health condition and also birth, bonding and placement of child for adoption or foster care, qualifying exigency, and up to 26 weeks in a single 12 month period for service member leave, with guarantees of job security and employee benefits continuation during the leave. This leave is unpaid; however, annual or extended illness leave may be substituted. This is not a separate leave program, but is integrated with other County leave policies.
