Florida Retirement System (FRS)
You may wish to discuss with our staff in Benefits your options for retirement through the Florida Retirement System and the possible continuation of insurance with the County as a retiree.
Important Note: If an employee is laid off and takes a disbursement of any kind from the FRS (including investment account) FRS will consider them retired and they can not come back to work for an FRS agency for at least 6 months - even if we call them back from layoff thru first rights of refusal. For example: If you decide in January to take some money out of your investment account to try and keep from losing your house and then in March we call you and offer you a job back with the County. You can't come back and we can't hire you back! Please make inquiries with the FRS regarding any additional information. (http://www.myfrs.com/imageserver/pdf/forms/rermploymentflyer.pdf)
If you are considering using your second election to switch from the FRS Pension Plan to the FRS Investment Plan, or vice versa, you would want to call the Financial Guidance line at 1-866-446-9377. The second election does have to be completed prior to your separation from service. We encourage you to check your options as soon as you can to make the best choice for your particular situation.
