Insurance Benefits Information

What happens to my insurance when I am laid off?
All of your insurance plans through the County will continue until the end of the month of your last day of employment. This includes your health, dental, life, flexible spending accounts, short term and long term disability. The EAP services will be offered to impacted employees through December 31, 2011. Any premiums deducted from your pay in advance for coverage for which you will not be eligible will be refunded to you in your final paycheck.

There are options for you to continue certain coverages on your own, which are detailed below.

You will be offered COBRA to continue your medical, dental, and/or health care flexible spending accounts. The coverage will be the same as the active employee plans. COBRA can be continued for up to 18 months. A brochure explaining your COBRA rights and a rate chart are included for your review.

If I am Recalled or Hired back to the County, when will my benefits start?
When you are recalled or rehired to County Service, you will be eligible for all insurances and coverages, however, you will have to complete a new waiting period as though you were a new employee. Your benefits will begin on the 1st day of the month following your 30 day waiting period. For example, if you are hired on the 5th of December, your insurances will begin on February 1.

You can begin contributing to your Deferred Compensation plan immediately upon your return to service. Your FRS service time will begin immediately upon your return to service. If you have County paid Long Term Disability, that benefit will begin immediately upon your return to service provided you have been separated from service less than 12 months.

The County will provide you with a Certificate of Creditable Coverage for the period in which you were enrolled as an active employee and you will be mailed COBRA enrollment information directly from WageWorks, the administrator for the COBRA program.

You also have the option to continue Basic and Supplemental Life Insurance on your own through the portability or conversion provisions of the plan. Information and a sample form are included below. A form with your specific information will be forwarded to you.

If you participate in the WrapPlan Life Insurance it can be continued after you leave employment. Benefits will notify the Company of your separation of service. You may choose to continue the policy on your own or cancel it and take the cash value. If you have questions, you may contact the WrapPlan directly at 1-800-322-0426.
