- Volunteers needed to Help with Pet Pick-ups From Special Needs Citizens During Evacuations
- Greeter:
Animal Services is seeking to fill a need in the customer service area. Approximately 300 citizens visit our facility each day, seeking one or more of the many services we provide. Upon entering the lobby area, where people should go to obtain these services can be quite confusing, especially when there are a lot of people present. We are looking for people orientated volunteers to greet and direct our customers to the proper areas to fill their needs. The greeters will provide additional information regarding all aspects of the department such as brochures and handouts. The volunteer will get on the job orientation and training to effectively handle this assignment.
- Animal Control Officer Assistants:
Are you interested in learning how to be an animal control officer? What a better way to learn than to ride-a-long and assist an animal control officer on daily field duties. Each volunteer will get on-the-job orientation and training to effectively handle these assignments, without being placed in harms way.
- Kennel Assistant:
The kennel assistant will work with the animal care staff and learn how to properly clean and sanitize the kennels, feed and water the pets, and assist citizens that come into the shelter looking for a lost pet. Each volunteer will get on-the-job orientation and training to effectively handle these assignments.

Dog Walker/Socializer:
Volunteers that want to help exercise the dogs in our adoption area, and gain their own exercise as well, can take the dogs out for a casual walk or play with them in one of the two exercise yards we have for them. The dogs jump for joy and bark every time a volunteer enters the adoption area, eager to play.
Or, volunteers can enter our cat adoption area and take the cats out of their cages one at a time and just sit down and socialize with them. They just love to be cuddled and they show how much they appreciate your time by their loud purr.
- Clerical Assistant:
Volunteers can assist the customer service staff and/or the administrative staff in various clerical areas with data entry, filing, making charts, or excel spreadsheets. Whatever your area of expertise may be, Animal Services would be happy to have you work side by side with us.
- Hospital Assistants:
Animal Services will allow veterinarians, veterinary technicians, or anyone else with the desire to learn what takes place in a pet hospital environment the opportunity to help with the daily workload in the hospital.
- Pet Groomer:
Experienced groomers can volunteer and can do makeovers on the dogs and cats received that are going into our adoption areas. Groomers have in the past taken dogs and cats that had never been properly groomed and given them baths, groomed them, sometimes putting ribbons on them and they get adopted almost immediately upon entering the adoption areas! Pinellas County Animal Services provides all the necessary equipment for this area of expertise.
- Phone Operators:
Volunteers can assist our enforcement staff in taking daily animal-related complaint calls over the telephone and learn how to effectively deal with the citizen’s questions and/or problems, and then enter the necessary data into the computerized dispatching system for our enforcement officers to perform their daily calls.

From Special Needs Citizens During Evacuations
A love of animals and enthusiasm for helping others are qualities adult volunteers need to assist special needs citizens who must evacuate their homes during an emergency such as a hurricane. Pinellas County Animal Services is welcoming applications to volunteer with transportation teams that take pets to other locations during a declared emergency.
Volunteers serve as auxiliary Disaster Animal Response Team (DART) members to help transport pets of special needs citizens to safe, predetermined locations. Those interested in volunteering should call Greg Andrews, operations manager at Pinellas County Animal Services, at (727) 582-2623. Helpers need to fill out Pinellas County volunteer applications and must complete training facilitated by the Bay Area DART Team.
Learn how to become an active member of DART 
This service helps special needs citizens who might otherwise decide not to evacuate because of their pets. With this service, these citizens feel more comfortable about leaving their homes, knowing their animals are safe. Of course, service animals may go to shelters, but other pets need to be cared for by making prior arrangements, such as signing up to go to a pet-friendly shelter or a host home.
If special needs citizens are already registered with their local fire department and have a pet which they need help evacuating, they should call Pinellas County Animal Services at (727) 582-2600 to register pets for pick-up.
