Get Involved - Ways to Help
Many caring pet-loving residents come to Animal Services to ask how they can help the animals we care for at the shelter. While our budget does allow us to provide the basics for the pets we care for, contributions help us go that extra mile to provide the high-level care these animals deserve. If you can,
here are two ways you can assist:
Through the Animal Welfare Trust Fund, our citizens are able to donate directly to the animals under our care. The donations that have so generously been shared are used for the extra medications and direct-care items for our cats and dogs that we might not otherwise be able to provide.
This fund was established in 2006 to provide for the receipt of gifts, grants and awards of money from either public or private donors to be placed in a trust and appropriated for the exclusive use, welfare and benefit of domestic animals within Pinellas County.
More than 20,000 animals are cared for at the shelter and adoption center annually. The Trust Fund makes it possible to care for a larger number of animals and provides special needs such as:
- Comfortable kennels
- Improved ventilation and quarantine/isolation facilities. These features aid in the reduction of disease through a healthier environment for animals up for adoption or lost pets waiting to be reclaimed.
- Medicine
- Special dietary food
- Toys to prevent boredom and sent “home” to provide familiarity during adjustment.
We have many opportunities for people who love animals and can donate some time to their well-being. From dog walkers to people greeters, we have many ways that the public can help us. Please call us at (727) 582-2600 for more information. Volunteer
Pinellas County Animal Services need many types of donations. If you cannot make a monetary donation to the “Animal Welfare Trust Fund.” you can still help in other ways. Please drop off all items at the front desk.
Many items are in need on a daily basis:
- Unopened cans or bagged cat and dog food
- Pet toys
- Leashes
- Collars
- Pet beds
- Crates of various sizes
- Cat condos
- Bleach
- Towels
- Blankets
- Newspapers
- Ink cartridges for computer printers (call to ask specifics)
This is also a great way to get children involved. Children can perform drives in their neighborhood for a school project!

Pinellas County Animal Services received a $20,000 grant from the Florida Friend license plate program in 2009, which was applied to the operation of the Animobile. You can help support the Florida Friend program by purchasing a Spay/ Neuter license plate. Purchases directly contribute to animal welfare in the state of Florida. Each year, license plate funds are distributed to local spay/ neuter programs
targeting animals at the highest risk for reproduction. For more information, visit Florida Animal Friend .
The Spay/Neuter license plates may be purchased through the Pinellas County Tax Collector .
